Data published by the Office for National Statistics shows that there were 8.4 divorces of heterosexual couples per 1,000 married men and women last year. This is a 45-year low and a 6 per cent decrease from 2016. However, divorce rates between same sex couples increased from 112 to 228 in a year.
The statistics show that for all couples unreasonable behaviour was the most common reason for divorce, with 83 per cent of women and 73 per cent of men citing it in their petition.
These statistics show a trend of less couples choosing to get married, and therefore less divorces.
