The Decree Nisi is a Court order confirming that the Applicant is entitled to a divorce whereas the Decree Absolute formally and legally ends the marriage entirely.
Once the Decree Nisi is granted, the marriage still exists and the parties are still not formally divorced but this stage signifies that the Court has accepted the grounds for divorce. The Applicant must then wait a minimum of six weeks and one day after the Decree Nisi is pronounced to then apply for the Decree Absolute.
