A good reason to stay at the office

Like many cities and towns, Wolverhampton has its fair share of vacant office space, comments Paul Kettle, a solicitor in the commercial property department at George Green LLP. The government is set to introduce a permanent permitted development right for change of use from offices to residential accommodation starting in May 2016. This will replace the existing temporary right.

The new office to residential permitted development right has been announced as part of a package of housing related initiatives, including the forthcoming Housing and Planning Bill as the government is leading a "national crusade to get homes built", with a target to deliver one million homes by 2020.

The permanent right will provide welcome certainty for those developers looking to convert offices into homes and so expect to see some new life breathed into some otherwise forlorn properties.
