Donation following Wolverhampton to Aberdovey Bike Ride

Local charity Black Country Foodbank recently received a donation following the annual Wolverhampton to Aberdovey bike ride, held in June last year.

The Aberdovey Bike Ride has been running for nine years and attracted over 300 riders in 2011. The ride raised a grand total of £45,000 and the Foodbank received a £5,000 donation. The Foodbank is the current supported charity of Black Country law firm George Green LLP. Partner and Head of Employment Tim Lang put forward the Foodbank to be one of the nominated charities in 2011 bike ride. Each rider is asked to fund raise and the money raised is distributed to a number of nominated local charities including the Black Country Foodbank. The other 2011 supported charities were the Ben Gannon Appeal, Castle Wheelers (Russells Hall Hospital), Whizz Kids (Special Wheelchairs), the Walsall branch of Diabetes UK and the Newport Cottage Care Home.

Mr Lang took part in the 103 mile ride as part of a team which included Alistair Blacklaws of Matrix Realty and Duncan Berry of DBK.

Wendy Fryatt of Black Country Foodbank commented “We are in awe of what Tim and the other riders achieved. The £5000 we’ve received will be used to buy a refrigerated van which will enable us to distribute fresh goods to those most in need. Recently, Dudley PCT gave us a grant to buy a chiller room, this gift from the Aberdovey Ride will mean we can get the fresh produce offering started safely.  The whole team at George Green LLP have been so active in their support over the last eighteen months, we can’t thank them enough”.

The Black Country Foodbank helps vulnerable individuals and families in crisis through the provision of three days emergency food supplies while a longer-term solution is developed.

In 2011, they fed a total of 6915 people in the Black Country alone. Approximately a third of those benefiting were children. They distribute vouchers to various agencies and the recipients of the vouchers can then collect food parcels at eight distribution centres in Halesowen, Stourbridge, Brierley Hill, Netherton, Dudley Central, Lower Gornal, Pensnett, Walsall and Coseley.  Their head office and central depot is based in Halesowen.
