George Green LLP has been busy encouraging and inspiring local students to consider a career in law by providing a series of Law Taster Days at their Cradley Heath office. Sixth form students from local schools and colleges considering reading law at university were invited to apply for a place on the scheme and 12 successful students attended each session.
The students taking part in the Taster Days were drawn from King Edward VI College, Windsor Sixth Form, RSA Academy, Halesowen College and Ormiston Forge Academy.
Alex-Jayne Lowe, Partner commented ‘At George Green we believe it is important to engage with the local community and wanted to offer a thoughtful and targeted opportunity to local students so they would be better informed about the options available to them in the legal profession and have a deeper understanding of the skills needed to be a lawyer before applying to universities. We asked our current Trainee Solicitors what information and tasks they would have found most beneficial and tailored the sessions accordingly’.
Greg Farley, a Trainee Solicitor, said 'we began by asking the students what they knew about the legal profession and discussed the range of services we offer to clients. The students were then asked to identify errors in a legal document and followed this with a comprehension exercise, in which they answered technical questions in relation to a more complex document. The students were then given an insight into the typical day of a Trainee Solicitor and took the opportunity to network with various solicitors, including Partners and Heads of Department, during lunch. The students were also informed of routes into qualification and finished the day by preparing for and participating in a mock trial'.
David Stevenson, Chief Executive at George Green commented 'a career in the law can offer so much in terms of challenge and opportunity .Law is not on many School curriculum and we are keen to help students gain an early insight to the work of a lawyer and the inside of a law firm so they are better enabled to make informed decisions about their future direction .I met and spoke to a number of the students and was impressed with the level of interest and questions posed of us .Good luck now to all of those who choose to commence on the journey to qualify as a solicitor.'
