Mock tribunal highlights employment issues

Black Country employers had an opportunity to learn more about the potential pitfalls of unfair dismissal claims when local law firm George Green LLP hosted a mock employment tribunal in association with the Black Country Chamber of Commerce.

The interactive event followed the fictional case of Joe Ninety versus Black Country Council, focusing on a case of misuse of social media in the workplace.

The 80 strong audience at Molineux Stadium saw Joe Ninety and the witnesses, played by members of the audience, being cross examined by Barristers Lachlan Wilson and Lloyd Maynard of 3 Paper Buildings. Audience members also put questions to witnesses and played Judge, voting on the outcome of the hearing.

Tim Lang, head of employment at George Green, said: “This was a light-hearted way to present the law relating to unfair dismissal to employers.  While the scenario was fictional, the issues it was based around could have serious and costly implications for any business.”

Paul Gordon, operations manager at Future Families Ltd, who attended the event, agreed:  “This was an interesting insight into how the tribunal system works. The mock tribunal highlighted the real value of carrying out a thorough investigation into employee misconduct.

“As a small company, it was particularly useful to think about who would be best placed to carry out any investigations or disciplinary hearings, should they arise.”
