What our experts say

The term 'quickie' divorce is somewhat misleading.  More often than not this refers to divorces which are undefended and dealt with on paper usually without any need for either party to attend court.

The vast majority of divorces are undefended, meaning that the other party will not actively deny the marriage has broken down and will allow the marriage to be dissolved even though they may deny the allegations against them.

There is no need for divorces to be contentious, it is preferable to try and reach an agreement in order to lessen the emotional impact on both parties of what is a very difficult time in their lives.

The media often use the term “quickie divorce” as a headline grabber, but is that really the end of the matter?

The simple answer is No!

Obtaining a Divorce is only one piece of the puzzle.

Divorcing couples still need to deal with Financial Issues.  This can be done by way of an agreement reached out of court, and approved by the court, called a Consent Order or by contested court proceedings.

The former is always preferable both in terms of costs but also emotional stress.
